Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) are local units of government that manage natural resource programs at the local level. Districts work in urban and rural settings with landowners and other units of government to carry out programs for the conservation and enhancement of soil, water, and other natural resources.

Please let us know if you have a conservation-related inquiry, would like conservation technical assistance on your property, or are interested in collaborating with the Illinois Valley SWCD on a potential project.

The Illinois Valley SWCD works on a variety of projects with landowners to promote sustainable land use and protect natural resources. Here are some common projects we can work with landowners on:

  1. Erosion Control: Projects help landowners implement practices to control soil erosion, such as planting cover crops, installing terraces, and creating buffer strips along waterways to improve agricultural water quality.
  2. Water Quality Improvement: Projects often focus on reducing nutrient runoff and improving water quality. This can include restoring wetlands, installing riparian buffers, and managing stormwater.
  3. Habitat Restoration: Projects that assist in restoring habitats for wildlife by planting native vegetation, removing invasive species, and creating pollinator habitats.
  4. Soil Health: Projects that promote practices that improve soil health, such as no-till farming, crop rotation, and the use of organic amendments.
  5. Drainage Management: Technical assistance for managing drainage issues, which can involve designing and installing drainage systems to prevent flooding and improve field conditions.
  6. Irrigation Modernization:  Projects to enhance water efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve drought resilience. These projects often involve upgrading outdated irrigation systems, which help conserve water, reduce energy use, and support sustainable agriculture.
  7. Fuels Reduction: These projects involve removing excess vegetation and creating defensible spaces, which help reduce the intensity and spread of wildfires. By managing fuels, we aim to protect homes, infrastructure, and natural resources, promoting a safer and more resilient environment
